Character Background and Description Madeline is a white, fertile female, that currently resides in the Fertility Tribe. She is ten years old and has a twin sister, Maisy. Both have light blonde hair, deep blue eyes, and stand at 4’5 feet tall. The only difference between the two, is a small scar Maisy has on her right arm.
Madeline has recently been blood-tested for fertility and the test came back positive. With these results, she will remain in the Fertility Tribe and continue her job as a babysitter. Once she hits puberty, she will begin her new job as a Childbearer. With her “gift” of fertility, her new job will consist of birthing children for the tribe. Some of these children will hopefully carry the gift of fertility or will be useful through trade. With this new change, Madeline is anxious for her future and burdened with the guilt of her test result. She worries about her infertile sister Maisy, who was not as fortunate and had to be sold by the tribe.
She treasures the last few months she has with her sister and longs for a time when they would never have to separate. Her only possessions are a small clay cup and ratty woven doll. Both of her prized items were gifts from Maisy. As Maisy goes through training in the Artisan Tribe she returns with gifts for her twin, to remember her by. It is unknown how often Madeline will be able to see her twin, and it remains her number one source of anxiety.
